Kyudo (弓道) is the Japanese martial art of archery.
Rooted in both the samurai warrior and ceremonial court traditions of feudal Japan,
Kyudo is a modern Budo (martial art) that blends physical development, mental focus,
and spiritual refinement to create a shot that is both accurate and beautiful.

Our History
Shiseikan has been practicing Kyudo in the Bay Area for over 30 years. The dojo was founded in 1992 by Yoshiko Buchanan, along with her co-teacher at the time Earl Hartman, and her husband E. Clay Buchanan.
Shiseikan led the organization and hosting of the 1st American Kyudo Seminar in 1993 in San Jose, and has continued to support the growth and development of Kyudo in the Bay Area and beyond since then.
Yoshiko sensei was a key member of the American Kyudo community throughout her career - serving as the President of both the Northern California Kyudo Federation and the American Kyudo Renmei, in addition to acting as a liaison to the International Kyudo Federation and supporting Kyudo groups in countries throughout the Americas. Yoshiko sensei passed away in 2023, and the role of chief instructor for Shiseikan passed to her most senior student Jon McAllister.
Jon sensei has been a member of Shiseikan since its founding and is dedicated to passing on the traditions of Kyudo practice.
